How to Replace Rear Brake Pads and Rotors on a 2015 Chevy Tahoe

Replacing the rear brake pads and rotors on a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is a manageable DIY repair if you have the proper lifting equipment, sockets, breaker bar, and torque wrench.

The biggest complication is usually removing the old rotors. The Tahoe uses a “drum-in-hat” parking brake: small parking-brake shoes operate inside the center section of each rear rotor. Even with the parking brake released, these shoes can catch on a rust or wear ridge and prevent the rotor from coming off.



This guide explains the complete rear brake replacement, including how to retract the parking-brake shoes when a rotor is stuck.

Tools and Supplies

You will typically need:

  • Floor jack

  • Properly rated jack stands

  • Wheel chocks

  • Safety glasses and gloves

  • 22 mm socket

  • 13 mm socket

  • 18 mm socket

  • Ratchets and extensions

  • Breaker bar

  • Torque wrench

  • Caliper piston compressor or large C-clamp

  • Flat screwdriver or brake-adjusting spoon

  • Small pick or pocket screwdriver

  • Wire brushes

  • Brake-parts cleaner

  • High-temperature silicone brake lubricant

  • Small amount of anti-seize

  • Bungee cord or caliper hanger

  • Clear hose and container if opening the bleeder screws


Important Safety Precautions


Work on a flat, solid surface. Place the transmission in Park, release the parking brake, and securely chock both sides of the front wheels.


Raise the rear of the Tahoe and support it with properly positioned jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack.


Do not inhale brake dust or blow it away with compressed air. Use brake cleaner to wet and remove accumulated dust.


Never allow the caliper to hang by its flexible brake hose.


Step 1: Remove the Rear Wheels


Loosen the six lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.

Raise and support the rear of the Tahoe, then remove the lug nuts using a 7/8" or 22 mm socket. Remove both rear wheels.

Having both rear wheels raised allows the hubs to rotate in opposite directions through the differential, even though the transmission is in Park. This is normal.


Step 2: Remove the Brake Caliper


The rear caliper is attached to the caliper bracket with two guide-pin bolts, typically removed with a 13 mm socket.


If a guide pin rotates with the bolt, hold the flats on the guide pin with an appropriate open-end wrench while loosening the bolt.


Before removing the caliper, gently pry it inward against the old brake pad. This retracts the piston slightly and creates enough clearance to lift the caliper over the pads.


Remove both guide-pin bolts and lift the caliper from the bracket. Support it on the trailing arm or suspend it with a proper caliper hanger. Make sure the brake hose is not twisted, stretched, or kinked.


Step 3: Remove the Old Brake Pads


Slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.

Note their orientation before discarding them. On this Tahoe brake configuration:

  • The inboard pad carries the wear indicator or “squealer.”

  • The wear indicator is normally positioned at the top of the bracket.

  • The outboard pad does not have a wear indicator.

Do not install two wear-indicator pads on one wheel and none on the other.


Step 4: Remove the Caliper Bracket


Remove the two 18 mm bolts securing the caliper bracket to the rear axle assembly.

These bolts are tight and may have factory thread-locking compound. Use a properly seated six-point socket and breaker bar. Do not use your torque wrench to break them loose.

Once both bolts are removed, lift the caliper bracket away from the rotor.


Step 5: Remove the Rotor Retainers


Some factory installations have thin, pressed-metal retaining washers installed over one or more wheel studs. These washers only hold the rotor in place during vehicle assembly.

Cut or pry them off and discard them. They do not need to be reinstalled.

If your rotor has a separate retaining screw, remove it before attempting to pull off the rotor.


How to Remove a Rear Rotor Stuck on the Parking Brake


First, confirm that the parking-brake pedal is completely released.

The parking brake can still hold the rotor even when it is not applied. Over time, the parking-brake shoes wear a groove inside the rotor hat. A raised ridge remains near the rotor’s open edge, and the shoes can catch behind that ridge when you try to remove the rotor.


Determine What Is Holding the Rotor


Try to pull and wiggle the rotor.


Rotor is completely solid


If the rotor has no outward movement, it is probably rusted to the hub.

Apply penetrating oil around the rotor’s center bore and where the rotor meets the hub. Avoid getting penetrant on the parking-brake shoes.


Strike the flat face of the rotor hat between the wheel studs with a heavy hammer. Rotate the rotor and strike several locations. Do not hit the studs.


If the old rotor will be discarded, you can also strike the outer braking surface from behind, alternating sides. Avoid hitting the backing plate or parking-brake components.


Rotor moves outward but stops


If the rotor moves outward slightly but will not come off, the parking-brake shoes are probably catching the internal ridge. Stop forcing the rotor and retract the shoes.


Retracting the Parking-Brake Shoes


Each rear wheel has its own parking-brake adjuster.

  1. Locate the parking-brake adjustment opening in the backing plate behind the rotor.

  2. Remove the rubber access plug, if present.

  3. Shine a flashlight through the opening.

  4. Locate the toothed star-wheel adjuster.

  5. Insert a brake-adjusting spoon or flat screwdriver through the opening.

  6. Rotate the star wheel several clicks.

  7. Check whether the rotor has become easier or harder to turn and remove.

  8. If the rotor becomes tighter, reverse the direction.

  9. Continue shortening the adjuster until the shoes retract enough for the rotor to pass over the internal ridge.


The adjusters may be mirrored from one side to the other, so relying on “up” or “down” for every related model can lead to mistakes. The reliable method is to make several clicks and test the rotor. If resistance increases, turn the star wheel in the opposite direction.

On some assemblies, an automatic-adjuster lever rests against the star wheel. You may need to use a thin screwdriver to hold that lever away from the teeth while turning the star wheel in the loosening direction.


Do not pull the rotor off so aggressively that you damage the parking-brake shoe, hold-down hardware, or backing plate.


Step 6: Inspect the Parking Brake


With the rotor removed, inspect:

  • Parking-brake shoe lining thickness

  • Loose or separated friction material

  • Broken or heavily corroded springs

  • Seized adjuster

  • Damaged hold-down hardware

  • Leaking axle seal

  • Parking-brake cable movement


If the lining is detached, oil-contaminated, cracked, or badly worn, replace the parking-brake shoes and hardware before installing the new rotor.


Step 7: Clean the Hub


Rust between the hub and rotor can prevent the new rotor from sitting flat. This can cause lateral runout, brake pulsation, uneven pad wear, and future rotor removal problems.

Clean the hub face and center pilot using a wire brush or abrasive pad. The mounting surface should be smooth and free of raised rust.

Apply an extremely thin film of anti-seize to the clean hub face and center pilot.


Do not apply anti-seize to:

  • Wheel-stud threads

  • Lug-nut seats

  • Rotor friction surfaces

  • Brake pads

  • Parking-brake shoe linings


Excess anti-seize can squeeze outward or be thrown onto braking surfaces.


Step 8: Clean and Install the New Rotor


New rotors may have protective oil on their braking surfaces and inside the parking-brake drum.

Clean the following areas with brake-parts cleaner and a clean, lint-free towel:

  • Both external braking surfaces

  • Inside the rotor hat where the parking-brake shoes operate

  • Wheel-mounting face


If the rotor has a fully applied corrosion-resistant coating and its manufacturer specifically states that cleaning is unnecessary, follow those instructions.

Slide the clean rotor onto the hub. It must sit completely flat without being forced over the parking-brake shoes.


Temporarily install two lug nuts backward by hand to hold the rotor firmly against the hub while completing the brake assembly.


Step 9: Clean the Caliper Bracket


Remove the old stainless-steel pad abutment clips.

Rust frequently develops underneath these clips and raises them enough to pinch the new pads. Clean the bracket lands with a wire brush until the new clips can sit completely flush.

Spray the bracket with brake cleaner and allow it to dry.


Apply a very thin coating of high-temperature brake lubricant to the cleaned bracket lands before installing the new clips. Do not use enough grease to squeeze onto the rotor.

Install the correct new clips and press them completely into place.


The OEM-style rear clips used on many 2015 Tahoes have spring fingers that help pull the pads slightly away from the rotor. If your vehicle-specific hardware includes these pad-spreader fingers, position them so they contact the pad ears and cannot touch the rotor. Do not mix clip styles across the axle.


Step 10: Service the Caliper Guide Pins


Pull both guide pins from the caliper bracket and wipe away the old grease.

Inspect each pin for:

  • Rust

  • Pitting

  • Scoring

  • Bent sections

  • Damaged sealing grooves

  • Hardened or swollen rubber components


Clean reusable pins and lubricate them lightly with high-temperature silicone brake lubricant compatible with EPDM rubber.


Do not use anti-seize, petroleum grease, general-purpose chassis grease, or wheel-bearing grease on the guide pins.


What if a guide pin is seized?


If a guide pin will not move:


  1. Remove the bracket from the vehicle.

  2. Carefully release the rubber boot from the bracket groove.

  3. Apply penetrating oil only to the metal pin-and-bracket joint.

  4. Clamp the bracket securely in a vise.

  5. Twist and pull the pin using locking pliers.

  6. If necessary, remove or sacrifice the rubber boot and carefully heat the bracket around the pin.

  7. Replace the pin, boot, or entire bracket if corrosion is severe.


Clean the guide-pin bore with brake cleaner and a small cylindrical brush. Do not enlarge the bore.


After lubricating and reinstalling each pin, compress the boot to release trapped air. If necessary, gently lift one edge of the boot with a small pick until the air escapes, then reseat the boot. Each pin should move smoothly through its full travel using hand pressure.


Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket


Position the bracket over the rotor and start both mounting bolts by hand. They must thread smoothly.


Clean old thread-locking residue from the bolts and threaded holes where required. Apply the manufacturer-specified medium-strength thread locker if called for by the service information.


For the common light-duty K2XX rear brake arrangement described in this procedure, the bracket bolts are tightened to 148 ft-lb. Some heavy-duty brake packages use different specifications, including substantially higher torque values.


Do not automatically apply the heavy-duty specification to a Tahoe 1500. Verify the brake package using the VIN, RPO codes, or factory service information. Step 12: Install the New Pads


Install the inboard pad with its wear indicator at the top. Install the pad without the wear indicator on the outboard side.


The pads should slide into the clips easily and move slightly by hand. If you must hammer or force them into position, remove them and clean additional rust from beneath the clips.

Pads that bind in the bracket can remain applied, causing overheating, rapid wear, pulling, and poor fuel economy.


Apply brake lubricant only where specified by the pad manufacturer, typically at the pad ears and appropriate metal-to-metal contact points. Never grease the friction material.


Step 13: Compress the Caliper Piston


Check the brake-fluid level in the master-cylinder reservoir before compressing the piston. Fluid rises as the piston moves inward, and an overfilled reservoir can overflow.

Use a caliper piston compressor or large C-clamp to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper. Protect the piston face and avoid damaging the dust boot.

The rear caliper piston on this setup presses straight inward; it does not normally require a screw-in piston tool.


Opening the bleeder screw while compressing the piston is optional. If you choose to do it:


  1. Clean the bleeder area.

  2. Attach a clear hose leading into a suitable container.

  3. Open the bleeder slightly.

  4. Compress the piston slowly.

  5. Close the bleeder before releasing the compressor.

  6. Clean spilled brake fluid immediately.

  7. Bleed the brake system if air may have entered.


Do not allow the master-cylinder reservoir to run empty.


Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper


Place the caliper over the new pads and align it with the guide pins.

Start both guide-pin bolts by hand. Hold the guide-pin flats with a wrench if the pin tries to rotate while tightening.


The procedure supplied for this brake configuration specifies 38 ft-lb for the rear caliper guide-pin bolts. Verify the specification for your exact brake package before final tightening.

Make sure neither guide-pin boot is twisted or pulled out of its groove.


Step 15: Readjust the Parking Brake


If you retracted the parking-brake shoes to remove the rotor, they must be readjusted.


  1. Keep the parking brake released.

  2. Access the star wheel through the backing-plate opening.

  3. Expand the shoes gradually while rotating the rotor.

  4. Continue until noticeable drag develops or the rotor becomes difficult to turn.

  5. Reverse the adjuster and retract the shoes gradually.

  6. Stop when the rotor turns freely with no continuous drag.

  7. Repeat on the opposite side so both parking brakes are adjusted evenly.

  8. Reinstall both rubber access plugs.


The formal method is to measure the rotor’s internal drum diameter and set approximately 0.026 inch (0.66 mm) clearance between the drum and parking-brake shoes. Apply and release the parking brake several times, then confirm that both rotors turn freely with the parking brake released.


Step 16: Reinstall the Wheels


Remove any temporary lug nuts holding the rotor.

Install the wheel and start all six lug nuts by hand. Snug them in a crisscross pattern.

Lower the Tahoe until the tire contacts the ground enough to prevent rotation, then tighten the lug nuts in a cross pattern to 140 ft-lb.


Never apply anti-seize or lubricant to the wheel studs unless the vehicle manufacturer specifically requires it. The specified lug torque assumes clean, dry threads.


Step 17: Restore the Brake Pedal


Before starting or moving the Tahoe:

  1. Confirm that all tools have been removed.

  2. Confirm that both calipers and brackets are installed.

  3. Check the brake-fluid reservoir.

  4. Slowly press the brake pedal approximately two-thirds of its travel.

  5. Release it and wait several seconds.

  6. Repeat until the pedal becomes firm.

Do not push the pedal to the floor unnecessarily, and never press the brake pedal while a caliper or rotor is removed.

If the pedal remains soft, inspect for leaks and bleed the brake system before driving.


Step 18: Initial Road Test and Pad Bedding


Start the vehicle and test the brakes at walking speed before entering traffic.

Confirm:

  • The pedal feels firm.

  • The Tahoe stops straight.

  • There is no grinding or severe scraping.

  • The parking brake applies and releases normally.

  • Neither rear wheel becomes abnormally hot.


Follow the brake-pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. A common procedure uses several moderate stops from approximately 30–40 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between cycles. Do not come to a complete stop and hold the brake pedal firmly while the brakes are extremely hot unless traffic requires it.


After the test drive, check for brake-fluid leaks and compare the temperature of both rear wheels. One significantly hotter wheel may indicate a binding pad, seized guide pin, tight parking-brake shoe, or sticking caliper.

Common Problems


The rotor will not move at all

Rust has probably bonded the rotor to the hub. Use penetrant around the center bore and strike the rotor hat between the studs.


The rotor moves outward but stops

The parking-brake shoes are catching a ridge inside the rotor. Retract the star-wheel adjuster instead of forcing the rotor.


The new pads will not slide into the bracket

Rust remains underneath the stainless-steel clips, or the clips are not fully seated. Remove the clips and clean the bracket lands again.


One guide pin will not move

The guide pin is seized. Remove and repair or replace the bracket before completing the job. A floating caliper cannot operate correctly with a frozen guide pin.


The new rotor scrapes after installation

Determine whether the sound comes from the service pads, parking-brake shoes, or bent backing plate. Readjust the parking-brake shoes until the rotor turns freely.


The pedal goes close to the floor

The caliper pistons have not yet been seated against the new pads, or air entered the hydraulic system. Pump the pedal slowly. If it does not become firm, inspect for leaks and bleed the system.
